About the 2009 Open Studios Event:

October 3–4, 2009

Whether in your apartment, house, garage, studio complex, or rented studio, you are encouraged to open your studio doors over the weekend of October 3–4, 2009. Artists from outside New Haven or artists in New Haven without studios are encouraged to find temporary studio or exhibition spaces in the New Haven area (East Rock, Westville, Fair Haven, West Haven, and Hamden/Newhallville).

For 2009 Open Studios Weekend, ArtSpace encourages artists to self-organize Alternative Spaces of any scale and make-up they may choose. Although ArtSpace will not centrally organize a single Alternative Space, we will advertise all artists' locations—including larger groupings of artists—via the various tools available to us through the revamped CWOS.org.

Guidelines for Organizing an Alternative Space

• Contact artists you would like to show with—explore the Artist Directory for contact information.
• Find a place that has enough space for you or your group, safe public access, enough light to show your work, electricity—if necessary, and that can be locked when you’re not there. Having a functioning bathroom is recommended but not a necessity.
• Get written permission from the property owner to use the space for a period of time that is adequate for you to set up, show, and take down your work.
• Notify ArtSpace of your plans so that your space can be advertised—more details will follow (see below).
• Please be respectful of the property owner and leave the space as you found it. It's recommended that you record the condition of the space with a few digital photos as soon as access is given.

Once you have registered at CWOS.org, click onto the opportunities link in your profile and participate in the open studio opportunity. This will ensure that your studio address is listed in the printed list for visitors during the Oct 3 - 4 weekend.
